The coalition has contracted nearly $700 million across more than 50 carbon removal projects, removing 1.8 million metric tons of CO2 to date.

Frontier, established in 2022 by Stripe, Google, and Shopify, has expanded its membership and financing strategy. According to TechCrunch, the coalition announced that future funding will come with heightened scrutiny, moving away from a portfolio of smaller bets toward fewer, larger investments in projects with greater removal potential. The organization will concentrate on carbon removal technologies including direct air capture, enhanced rock weathering, bio-oil, ocean alkalinity enhancement, and bioenergy with carbon capture and sequestration.

Companies joining Frontier purchase carbon removal credits to offset portions of their reported carbon footprints—a mechanism that allows firms to continue some emissions while compensating through removal projects elsewhere. This approach helps tech companies pursue near-term decarbonization targets while the carbon removal industry matures.
