Gemini Intelligence debuts on Galaxy Z foldables with expanded automation

Google announced the first phase of Gemini Intelligence at Galaxy Unpacked in London on July 22, rolling out three core capabilities to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Fold8, and Flip8 devices. According to the Google AI Blog, the initiative positions Gemini as a proactive productivity assistant that handles repetitive digital tasks, allowing users to reclaim screen time. The announcement marks a shift in AI deployment strategy—moving from query-response chatbots to background task agents embedded directly on Android hardware.

Task automation expands to 40+ applications

The most concrete feature is Gemini’s task automation, which broadened from a limited beta launched in February to support more than 40 popular applications. According to Google, the expanded suite now covers shopping, restaurant reservations, travel bookings, event ticketing, and rideshare orders. On the Galaxy Z Flip8, users can invoke task automation by long-pressing the power button and using the Flex Window—a compact display designed for quick interactions without unfolding the device.

Google’s framing emphasizes transparency and control. While Gemini executes tasks, users can monitor progress in real-time, pause to make adjustments, or hand off completion once review is complete. The system requests final confirmation before committing to purchases or reservations, reducing the friction between automation and user consent.

On-device Gemini Notebook and multimodal reasoning

Google is rebranding NotebookLM as Gemini Notebook and preinstalling it on the Galaxy Z Fold8 series. According to the blog post, the tool is positioned as a “thinking and research partner” for synthesizing complex information and managing deep projects on the foldable’s expansive display.

A secondary feature adds multimodal reasoning: Gemini can now parse images and complex visual content as prompts, interpreting shopping lists, inspiration photos, or screenshots to understand user intent without explicit text instructions. This capability theoretically reduces friction in task initiation—showing Gemini a reference image is faster than typing detailed specifications.

Why This Matters

The announcement signals Google’s shift from conversational AI (ChatGPT-style interfaces) to agentic AI embedded in consumer hardware. By preinstalling Gemini Notebook and anchoring task automation to Android’s core interaction patterns—long-press gestures, lock-screen access—Google is betting that adoption requires seamless OS integration, not a separate app store download.

For Samsung users, the practical benefit is measurable: delegating 40+ app categories to background agents reduces daily app-switching and notification fatigue. However, the business implication matters more: every automated task represents a data point feeding Gemini’s understanding of user preferences, shopping behavior, and daily routines. On-device processing may preserve privacy relative to cloud-based competitors, but the aggregated patterns still flow back to Google’s infrastructure for model improvement.

Teams building Android productivity apps should expect increasing pressure to support Gemini’s task automation API—much as iOS developers today optimize for Siri Shortcuts. The foldable form factor, with its larger inner display, gives Samsung first-mover advantage in showcasing these capabilities, but the features are rolling out to broader Android devices in subsequent phases.
