According to The Verge, Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced on August 5 a significant restructuring of Alphabet’s AI organization. Demis Hassabis, who co-founded DeepMind and has led the research division since Google’s 2014 acquisition, is transitioning to chair of Google DeepMind and chief scientist of Alphabet. Hassabis will retain leadership of Isomorphic Labs, Alphabet’s drug-discovery unit, while shifting from operational management to strategic and advisory responsibilities.

Koray Kavukcuoglu, DeepMind’s former chief technology officer, assumes the newly created position of senior vice president of Google DeepMind, reporting directly to Pichai. Kavukcuoglu will also retain his role as Google’s chief AI architect, combining research direction with operational oversight.

Hassabis Emphasizes Health Applications

In a staff message, Hassabis framed his transition as an opportunity to accelerate AI’s application to medicine. “It’s time for AI to prove its unequivable value to the world, and what better way to demonstrate that than to help finally cure diseases like cancer,” he stated. The DeepMind founder indicated he will continue advising on “strategic and global AGI matters” with Pichai and will mentor the new leadership team under Kavukcuoglu.

Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat Launch Discovery Loop

In a parallel departure, Jeff Dean—DeepMind’s chief scientist and Google’s 30th employee—is leaving to co-found Discovery Loop alongside Sanjay Ghemawat, a Google Fellow. According to The Verge, Discovery Loop is structured as a public benefit corporation focused on building AI systems that solve problems in machine learning, science, and engineering. Google will participate as a “founding investor.”

The company’s stated mission centers on automating scientific and engineering discovery to accelerate problem-solving in research-intensive domains. This distinguishes Discovery Loop from consumer-facing LLM development, positioning it as a complement to rather than competitor with Google’s core AI efforts.

Why This Matters

The restructuring signals a strategic bifurcation within Alphabet’s AI portfolio. By elevating Hassabis to a chief scientist role focused on health and cross-company AGI strategy, Google is acknowledging that near-term commercial LLM competition (increasingly managed by Pichai and the product teams) and long-horizon research require different operational structures.
